Some random updates from the past week:

Our dog might have a food allergy so we had a few trips to the vet lately and other little annoying things that come with that. My 6th grader came close to a broken finger during the week because while he was holding the door at recess someone decided to smash it on his finger (still don't know if was accidental or not) and same child sprained his foot Saturday because he was jumping off the top of the neighbors playset. He seems to be doing better and isn't getting too much sympathy from me because I know myself and I think every other mom in the neighborhood has asked him not to do that. He
is getting some sympathy since I did carry him home and didn't yell at him. The doctor told him he needed to walk on it still so no note for gym, but he did need to make sure he didn't do anything crazy like chores and the dishes. ha ha. I am so not amused. My daughter's room is pretty much finished, just a few finishing touches I'd like to do. Finished one son's bedroom except a couple finishing touches. Still need to do other sons' room and I let my neighbor talk me into not forgetting out about my own room. We did take a little break from our all consuming house stuff and visited a corn maze.
Had parent teacher conferences- my son who was shy last year is not so shy this year and a tad on the silly side after lunch & recess (because of the long day I think & at least he's happy so I'm not worried) and although he is my most independent and responsible at home his teacher finds him a little disorganized, and although he is in the lowest reading group, my husband and I are thinking he is doing far better than a just a month ago seeing as he actually wants to read now and he didn't then- summary, I think she thinks we're a little crazy. Oh, and I refrained from bringing the dictionary pronunciation of pajamas, dragon, and raccoon even though I found out it was her who told him they are not short a words! Don't get the wrong impression, I do like his teacher. Oh, this is kind of funny- when she told us her class was a little silly, in particular my kid, after recess, she said she has tried playing calming ocean waves type stuff to get them to relax and wind down. I didn't have the heart to say, "Well, that's your problem! That is probably what is inspiring my child to crack a silly smile that grows into uncontrollable giggles and tickling neighbors! It makes me laugh thinking about it."
Other parent teacher conference went well- I am thrilled with my 6th grader's teacher. He has thrown out the spelling packet that I have never liked and has the students quiz each other instead. He is also having them do more writing assignments and note taking instead of more worksheet packets. I hated the packets my daughter brought home in 6th grade. I am so happy. :) And, yes there is more, when I mentioned my son has never really fit in with his peers, but from what he's told me I'd honestly rather he didn't, but wondered how he was doing at school socially, he said, while everyone has good qualities, there is a group of boys he would have more of a concern if my son started trying to fit in and would talk to him about it if he did, and was glad to see he had separated himself from them and could be his own person and seemed happy, polite and social, but if he noticed that change he would let me know and talk to him himself, too. He also says he goes out at recess for a few minutes almost everyday to check on the kids and how they are at recess! WOW- that is huge to me; here no teachers go outside at recess (it's their prep time) and whenever I have asked about any of my kids socially I have often gotten the response, "Well, I'm not outside at recess..." I left a happy mom and I think I should write the principal a thank you note for finding this great teacher.

I still need to meet the 8th grade teachers, but I'm not too concerned.
More random stuff- If you were ever wondering what other uses there are for vacuum filters my youngest has found they make a great prop as a lantern when he is pretending to be Green Lantern. And something I
didn't say...
