This week has been a busy one. Lots of just regular little stuff that keeps you busy plus extra stuff like parent teacher conferences, PTO meeting, kids giving talks in church, and my child number 3's birthday! Friday he turned 7. Sadly my camera refused to work that day, but is working today, so no pictures. :( Friday was a day off school so we were able to have a whole day of fun. My husband and two snowboarding boys went snowboarding and the rest of us went tubing (at the same place). My neighbor and her kids joined us since that happened to also be what her 6 year old with the same birthday wanted to do. We had a great time for two hours and by then the youngest two were very tired and hungry. We went home for lunch and opening presents. Later we were going to meet our friends we went tubing with at Chuck E Cheese, but the birthday boy decided he would rather stay home and watch a movie and eat pizza ordered in. Of course I fully supported that option- I don't like Chuck E Cheese and I didn't think my youngest could handle the over stimulation of such a place since he was a little grumpy from waking up at 6 am, having a wonderfully fun morning, tired from going up and down the hill over and over, someone else getting tons of attention, not having his typical quiet day with no bossy older siblings, and being hungry for dinner... We ordered dominos and watched Clue. The kids have had a lot of fun playing the game and were excited to see the movie. Typical 80's movie- we thought it was okay. We also sang and ate cake. :)
Tuesday was parent/teacher conferences at the Jr. High. I was able to make it once last year and now once this year and I found it interesting that both times were very similar even with different teachers. Most of my daughter's teachers said, "Oh, she's a good kid, kind of quiet, but not anti social" or "let me see, which hour is she in again?" kind of comments, but her math teachers say stuff like, "Oh, (child's name). She's a great kid, no worries for her, she's getting an A, you're going to have a boring parent/teacher conference, if she doesn't quite understand something she always asks, she seems to really be doing well, etc." And her science teachers say "(child's name)! She is such a hoot! I just love having her in class! Her sense of humor! She has sort of a oh, dry wit." I would like to have said, "Please, tell me more" but there was a line of people waiting their turn. After a handful of elementary school parent/teacher conferences that went about the same as the english, p.e., home ec. teachers comments and a kindergarten teacher that made us sign papers stating we refused to follow her recommendations to hold our child back in kindergarten for a second year it feels really good to hear that math and science teachers "get" her personality. I would really like to be a fly on the wall and see if she is actually behaving differently in the classes or what kind of subtle humor she is displaying in science that seems to endear her to her teachers; or if the the teachers are better at saying nice things or if she really has a knack for the math science world. You know, see the whole dynamics. I did volunteer to help in my daughters sewing class a couple times this month and once in her art class so maybe I'll get a little peek. I asked my daughter if she would mind if I volunteer because some kids are more particular than others as to the "coolness" of their parents. She doesn't mind, but informed me that I can't just help her because the teacher asked me to come help with the whole class & has been kindly preparing me for the day I go by telling me things like, "It is VERY crowded." "The kids are VERY tall." "There is A LOT of bad language."
I'll have to let you know how it goes.
Last Sunday my child number 2 had to speak in primary, this Sunday my daughter has to speak in Sacrament meeting, my youngest has to speak in primary, my husband is giving a prayer in sacrament meeting, and I think child #3 may have given a scripture or something in primary so now they are all telling me that the bishopric will surprise ask me to speak at the end of the meeting because I'm the only one in the family not doing anything this month (and the bishop has done that the last couple of months). I hope not. I might throw up. I don't like that kind of thing. I say a lot of stupid things off the top of my head (as maybe you've noticed in my blog posts over the years or if you know me in real life) and like to carefully plan what I say if it is to be said over the pulpit. Next post I will post my kids talks.

hair brushed and parted, typical me...
...typical me, I've started something and I'm not sure what it was. Well, today did not start off the best for me. Rather embarrassingly actually. Well, very embarrassing. I suppose it wouldn't have to be if I kept this to myself, but where's the fun in that? Partly I'm sharing because it's such a great opportunity to use fitting song lyrics for my title.
I was brushing my hair. I was using my daughter's Christmas gift of 4 different brushes for the use of different stages of wetness and dryness and for use while blow drying your hair. They actually do make a difference. This morning though, my daughter suggested I try the curling brush rather than only using the straightening brush. She told me how easy it is and how well it curled her hair. I wasn't too sure about it, I never was a fashionista or well coordinated and blow drying and brushing is hard enough for me, but hey why not? Well, I'll tell you why not. I managed to get the brush stuck in my hair.
Stuck enough I was worried I was going to have to cut my hair to get it out. I was thinking I would have to miss church for the third week in a row (because the last 2 weeks someone would get sick), but then people would ask my husband where I am and he would have to say, "Oh, she is home with a brush stuck in her hair". He couldn't say I wasn't feeling well because then all the pregnant women I saw at the baby shower I went to yesterday would panic and the missionaries that we had over for dinner and happened to joke around with about faking sick and skipping church would be sure I was faking or worry about the food they ate being prepared by someone sick, even though being sick and not feeling well are not necessarily the same thing. On the other hand I can't go to church with a brush stuck in my hair. I never wanted a really short haircut either. While worrying about these things I managed to also get a brush bristle stabbed under my fingernail and it bled a little, but mostly hurt like crazy for a bit.
sheesh. And to think, yesterday I was thinking that my little kids are getting big, and they are so cute and funny and keep life interesting when they are little. What am I going to do when they grow up and aren't like that anymore? I guess I will manage to keep life interesting on my own.

Nutchele.blogspot.com
I did it even though no one seemed to think it was a good idea (i.e. it be nice if someone commented). My art blog is still in the early stages. I want to add more tabs and pictures and stuff, but you can check out what I did today. Tell me what you think so far. nutchele.blogspot.com

Last weeks' colors this weeks' portrait
I'm thinking about starting an art lesson blog. Anyone interested in reading that kind of thing? It might be more of a space for me to collect my ideas that will take up less space than storing the files of ideas in my house. There are a number of art for kids blogs out there but I only found a couple I liked before I got bored. Any feedback?
Other happenings the past week or two: Child #3 was star of the week last week. Here's his poster:
He is so awesome :) In case it is too hard to read it says his favorite food is orange chicken, his favorite animal is dogs, his favorite color is green. He is on the top left, top right is a family picture, middle left says, "The pumpkin patch and Lake Superior are my favorite places to be" with a photo of him feeding cows at the pumpkin patch and him on a rock at the lake. Middle right says, "When I grow up I want to be a musher". The bottom left says, "My favorite thing to do is build stuff and watch Harry Potter" with a picture of him in the cardboard tank he made. The bottom right says, "If I had one wish I would wish for being the first man to walk on Mars" (my child #2 claims child #3 stole that from him). He also had strep throat Sunday and Monday. Tuesday he had snowboarding lessons and his teacher said he is getting pretty good.
A couple Fridays ago child #4 (and all the boys) went to a basketball game and talked for days about it- I guess they had a half time thing of "What would you do for a Klondike bar?" and somebody had to drink raw eggs, but he couldn't tell from where he was sitting if the person actually got a klondike bar or not. He also has been talking and laughing about how strange it was that there were girls there in their underwear! (the cheerleaders). He is also very busy this week memorizing Caps for Sale and Rikkitikkitembo, two books we have on cd. He came up to me Thursday or Friday and said, "Mom, I just love it that every living thing is made up of just 4 elements." He has also been listening to the They Might Be Giants science cd we have. He informed us,out of the blue, one night at dinner that if he ever works at McDonalds wiping tables and his boss yells at him he will shake his head and say, "mammamia!"(something we haven't been listening to). He also says every once in awhile, "Mom, I just love all the days." He is so happy and sweet, I am glad in the fall Kindergarten will only be half days or I would miss him too much. He is a sweetheart. More news on #4, we took him to the Dr. Saturday and he has influenza. Yes, I was a "negligent" momma and did not get anyone flu shots this season. We had a pretty busy fall and I didn't even think about it, plus I usually don't do it anyway. He's on tamiflu and feeling much better today.
Child #2 had a great time at snowboarding lessons too. Not only did he learn how to do tornados he also played a prank on a kid in his group. He pulled his hand up inside his sleeve and said "AAh! I lost my hand!" Another kid screamed and said, "I will go get a parent!" and "ran" up the hill hopping and crawling with his snowboard attached to his feet up the hill. At first I did not believe a kid that age would fall for that (isn't it the "oldest trick in the book?"), and he had to be playing along, but my son is sure the kid was really worried and surprised when they were yelling after him that he was joking. I suppose there is many a kid raised in a home not near as silly as ours. It's been awhile since we've had any good stories like that.
Child #1 has had a pretty uneventful week and is just hoping she won't get sick, because she hates making up the homework she misses.
In theory I have had a pretty good couple of weeks, getting everything done on my lists and even exercising a couple of times a week besides walking the dog, but for some reason I feel fatter & I'm nervous that since I feel organized for a change maybe something else is going to change. Maybe being a non worried fat slob is better? Ha Ha ha :)

I will always remember this for the rest of my life
You know when you are laughing so hard and you can barely speak and then sigh after your sentence? Tonight was one of those nights for us & my title is a quote from my eleven year old right before his gasp for air. We were listening to the radio while eating dinner (the current streaming online for those curious). Suddenly my 4 year old starts speaking excitedly & not completely clear, "Look at my butt! Look at my butt! It's doing strange things because of this music! Look at it! No. Look behind me, look behind me. You have to see this! Look at my butt! Look at my butt! It's just doing these strange things!" He seemed puzzled and excited about his uncontrollable urge to shake his butt to the music.
Let the butt jokes begin! My 11 year old then reminded us about the time when child #3 or #4, we can't remember which, was maybe 2 and said in a concerned voice, "Mom, my bottom is talking to me." Me: "Is it telling you that you might need to go to the bathroom?" (It is funny to my 11 year old that I would even say that, but I think all mom's would agree that it is a reasonable question to a 2 or 3 year old) Child: "No, it just says, thbpt" Butt: "thbbppppt" Child: "It did it again, it's talking to me!" I had to throw in a bit of justice and tell about the time my eleven year old was maybe 2 and said his butt burped. The younger two boys, especially my 6 year old, laughed hysterically.
How we went from that to talking about "My Little Buttercup" from The Three Amigos I do not remember, oh, no, wait, I think a song on the radio mentioned the word buttercup,so we decided to watch that part of the movie from the part where the German guy goes into the bar until after the other German guys go into the bar, and then we laughed some more and had to try hard not to give in to the pleadings to watch more funny parts so we skipped to the canteen scene and the singing bush, and then we said they really did have to go to bed, and we will watch the whole thing another day. If you are in the mood for some silliness, that movie is highly recommended by me. Hilarious! HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa!BigdeepbreathBigsigh.
On a COMPLETELY different note, I noticed my I'm a Mormon link works now.

Diamond Days
This morning the snow was sparkly like diamonds were thrown all over it. We had a rain that iced everything over and then a cold light snow. Now I am looking out my window and it is snowing again and I feel like I am inside a snowglobe. It's those kind of snowflakes.
I'm kind of thinking I don't want to shovel again as we have had a lot of snowy days. The temps are still above 0 so I am happy and it's great weather for winter.
We had a good holiday break of doing pretty much nothing. I read Pride and Predjudice since my daughter checked it out from the library. We added the 6 hour long movie to our netflix queue and maybe we can slowly sneak it to the top of the list so no boys notice & put them through the misery of watching it. Hey, I figure we have seen plenty of StarWars, Wierd Al, Shark Week, James Bond, and other total "guy" shows that maybe they can sacrifice a little. I did just make them watch Anne of Green Gables though with the point that they should watch it if not just simply to strike up conversation with a girl interested in such fine literature. :) Since we just watched that I might have to put up with a few more "guy" shows before pride and predjudice gets its turn. However if you'd like to join me I can put it on the calendar and have a great reason for giving it a higher priority in the queue.
Oh, back to the subject of "guy" shows, we did watch a James Bond movie from the 60's awhile ago (I think it was Thunderball?) and my littlest asked something I can't remember anymore, but my answer was "because this movie is totally for men. Men love girls, and fights, and cool machines and cars, and..." "And eye patches!" he excitedly chimed in, "but I don't really like eye patches." ...There was a guy wearing an eye patch.
Sunday our Bishop shared a nice reminder of the story of Lot's wife- I know you are thinking, "nice reminder? She gets turned to a pillar of salt!" Anyway, he related it to the new year and how we should all look forward with hope and faith. I thought it was nice as we received a handful of Christmas letters relating the misfortunes of the past year and I even didn't write a letter because I couldn't say much that wasn't sarcastic or a little depressing for how the past year went. Anyway, I'm looking forward to a joyful new year in 2011 & wish you a joyful new year too. :)
